Sprezzatura is as much a coffee roastery and supplier as is it a café. If you haven’t already tried their customised blends in cafés such as The Grumpy Cyclist or The Owls Café, head to their HQ in Phileo Damansara for a cup or two. Though blends rotate regularly, there is much focus on the low acidity of Indonesian beans, most likely from the Tana Toraja region. The wonderfully approachable Jamie, who heads the roasting and brewing works, will fill you in on the profile of each variety on offer.

The staffs opened the glass door for us and greeted us warmly into this humble little cafe. A pleasant whiff of freshly baked breads & pastries greeted us , making my tummy rumble as if there is a 7.0 magnitude earth quake going on inside my tummy. Ahhh, the smell of freshly baked goods is the best!
The interior was rather homey with an industrial feel- walls painted dark grey, with a side of the walls constructed of rocks with metal wiring to keep it in place, and black tables & chairs arranged in a manner to maximize space efficiency.

In general, the Mix Grilled Time and Grilled Lamb Steak are above average as meats are fresh and are very well-grilled. But I don’t like how they use just the same gravy for almost all of their dishes. I mean, how hard is it to make black pepper sauce? Could it be something already pre-made? I think for a cafe to show its standard, that should change. Something a bit more creative or sophisticated will do. The Grilled Fish (without the gravy) was pretty satisfying, juicy and not overcooked. The wedges that comes with it were really unforgettable too!

Coffee and pastries currently dominate the menu, but we reckon its strength lies in the quaint setting. The café is dreamily fitted with teal-coloured hangings, a rather intriguing chalk-drawn portrait of a bear, and wood-heavy furniture.

Once inside my attention was diverted by these really gorgeous looking croissants; golden and puffy. As I stood there attempting to choose only ONE pastry/cake, I commented to Alex; owner of Butter + Beans At Seventeen that the croissants looked really good. He was upfront to tell me that these were actually more “bready†in texture versus the really French flaky types. With that I dismissed the croissants and looked for an alternative. I still prefer my croissant flaky I’m afraid.

The girl on the other hand, liked the Apricot Danish more. Soft pastry layered with custard cream and crowned with halved apricot. She happily bite into her favourite apricot and ended up with super sour expression. Yeap, the apricot was packed with juiciness, but with intense sourishness as well. But it complemented perfectly with the sweet custard and buttery pastry, so they were best eaten together.

Despite the small space the cafe is pretty cozy. There’s varieties of breads, pastries and cakes on display but we didn’t order any since we were there to try out their coffee.

Xiao specialises in selections of gateau-style cakes & tarts that will evolve from time to time – highlights from her current Magnificent Seven include Le Cerf, layered with hazelnut dacquoise, moelleuex au chocolat & milk chocolate chantilly cream on a crispy-crumbly base, topped with a deer-shaped thin chocolate slice (RM16), one of the many photogenic concoctions that’ll show up on social media in the weeks to come. If you’re searching for a sumptuously nuanced dessert, try Goma Goma, an eclair with pleasurably nutty accents, irresistibly punctuated with creamy sesame ganache & hazelnut mousseline (RM13).

Everything looked pretty so it can be tough to make a choice without being tempted to buy them all. At least that was how I felt when I was at Xiao. But we settled for the Goma Goma (RM13), a pretty éclair of sesame ganache and hazelnut mousseline, topped with chocolate and edible gold.

Kitchen seems to have taken a large space in Xiao by Crustz, leaving elongated section with customized wooden tables and chairs mounted on walls, about 5 seats in the row. Limited space for each, best for couple or diners in two, crowded for groups. There are two more larger tables near to the dessert counter, cater to at most 10 pax at once. Expect the second floor to cater more diners in near future.

The online-based patisserie takes its petit gateau and cakes offline with an elegant physical store in Happy Mansion. Try the well-crafted Le Cerf, a petit gateau layered with hazelnut dacquoise, moelleuex au chocolat and milk chocolate chantilly cream on a crumbly base topped with a thin deer-shaped chocolate slice, or for a more fruity dessert, the delicate La Vie En Rose shortbread cookie crust with pate a choux dough, stuffed with raspberry jam and sandwiched with rose chantilly.
