Into the second section of the cafe lies an area with more comfy sofa seats and a long communal table to accommodate bigger group of patrons. It has a great easy-going vibe which I don’t mind spending my whole afternoon here sipping my cup of tea with my favourite book.

The interior was simple yet cosy, stylish & chic at the same time. Metal tables & chairs with contrasting colours were used, giving the cafe some vibrant vibes. One side of the walls were finished with red bricks, and the other side was just plain grey cement, which I find really rustic yet charming.

Lucy In The Sky promises relatively healthy cooking, relying on organic ingredients whenever possible. But that’s not necessarily meant to provide customers with carte blanche to overdose on four preparations of eggs in one sitting: poached, scrambled, sunny-side-up & over-easy …

The Pesto Pasta, which is packed with a generous mix of pine nuts, sun-dried tomatoes, local spinach, chilli flakes and garnished with fresh cherry tomatoes. Also try their own house blend of coffee, Friday the 13th (a blend of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Brazil Yellow Bourbon and Sumatra Lintong) – but it’s not for the superstitious.

The owners of the prewar Old China Café have ventured into a more contemporary project – a nifty little café along Jalan Panggung. The space is a bit like your nanna’s house meets hip coffeeshop with wooden chairs, mahogany coffee tables and a stand fan. Try the hand-drip or siphon-brewed house coffee blend featuring a merging of local and international beans, which you can sip alongside a slice of their signature coffee cake embedded with walnuts and chocolate chips. Both a café and art gallery, this new joint lets you order a cup of coffee and enjoy art at the same time.

This hidden hideout’s not exactly a hipster hangout: Aku exudes Chinatown charm, reflected by its blast-from-the-past furnishings. This isn’t a cafe that could have existed in the 1980s, but its historical inspirations lie in plain sight. Rocking horses rule.

Aku Special Cake for Coffee (Rm 6.90). Read its name, and I knew I must order this. Their signature Fluffy spongy coffee cake that was richly filled with walnuts and chocolate chips, sweet but not too sweet and went well with the coffee. The sourish homemade apple jam/sauce that loaded with goji berries compatible well with the cake too!!! It played around the sourish and sweet note on the tastebuds at the same time.

In the Old China Cafe, spicy dishes rule the menu and as an introduction, try out their Nyonya pai tee. Crispy deep-fried flour in a shape of a top hat comes with condiments such as bean sprouts, shredded turnip and carrots, and if you’re wondering how to attempt this, here’s how. You stuff the deep-fried flour with the vegetables and top it off with the chilli sauce before eating it whole. Eating pai tee is always a fun affair, and it serves as a great starter, especially during big family dinners. For mains, we recommend beef rendang and fish head curry, and you can have it with a choice of either plain white rice, or the blue-tinged coconut rice. The cafe’s beef rendang is especially good – tender and spicy, just as how we like it. As for soups, try out the itik tim, which is a duck soup boiled with salted vegetables and lean pork meat, and ginseng soup, a great option for the health-conscious. For RM8.90 per bowl, this is one of the cheapest ginseng soups we have ever stumbled upon in KL. As for desserts, items such as bubur cha-cha and sago gula Melaka make up the menu. The bubur consists of little cubes of sweet potatoes and taro in a thick sweetened coconut milk served as a nice ending to our pleasant evening of Peranakan fare in the cafe.

Classic old Chinese cafe. The furnishing and lighting enhanced the ambience. Paintings on the wall were slightly crowded but that was how I remembered it from old films. Background music brought back memories of that era. From the entrance door to the flight of steps to the kitchen, Old China Cafe did a marvellous job at keeping he place intact. However, I wished they had invested in a little refurbishment. Also, I am sure that the place can do with a bit of dusting.

My favourite dish today was the Pork Pong Teh. Cooked in a different manner to which I am accustomed, this dish had a complex balance of flavour, with a sensible kick of spice. Tender pork belly slices, smothered and slow cooked in local spices, gave a new twist on what has been an old favourite of mine. Interesting to note was the use of banana blossom – adding to the uniqueness of the flavour.

A fierce contender for the title of KL’s most beautiful cafe, this new venue is blessed with the kind of old-world charm that’s long been monopolised by Malacca, Ipoh & Penang. The cafe’s over-the-counter tagline – ‘This Must Be The Place’ – might prove prophetic in a sense, though it feels tantalisingly vague, potentially referencing a panoply of pop-culture possibilities.

Overall, the food isn’t much to shout about though I prefer this to the other hangout spot down the road. Prices are affordable so if you’re looking for a casual hangout place with photo-worthy corners, this is an option. If you’re going for just the food, you won’t be too impressed.

It’s not hard to understand the appeal of Merchant’s Lane. It’s filled with plenty of natural light perfect for photography (and Instagramming), friendly staff, menu is a bit different from the rest which gives it a touch of uniqueness, plus it’s not obscenely overpriced. What more can you ask for of a cafe? Air conditioning, maybe.

The highly rated ‘South China Sea’ (RM24) left us disappointed. While we loved the tender grilled salmon fillets and mango-corn salsa, the house made hash were charred and the poached eggs were really weird. The eggs were filled with puddles of water as we cut into it. Coffee was decent though. Despite some minor misses in our food order, Merchant’s Lane is still a venue worthy of our idyllic weekend afternoon.

Welcome to the neighbourhood: Petaling Street’s latest destination is an ambitious amalgam of a tranquil restaurant called Chocha Foodstore & an upcoming wine lounge, coffee bar, co-working space, newsagent & bicycle rental shop, initiated by the MentahMatter design firm, with a raw, almost unvarnished authenticity shored up by charming embellishments (check out the lovely, leafy courtyard), squeezed into yet another former brothel on the same street as smash hits Merchant’s Lane & PS150.

Split over two levels, the ground floor houses Chocha Foodstore — which the design duo now run together — a place for clients to sit (Cho) and drink tea (Cha); surrounded by the sort of industrial ruin that could send urbex Instagrammers into a fit of self-combustion, and natural sunlight that casts oft-ethereal shadows throughout the day. Creative spaces are dotted around the ground- and first-floor, solid walls downstairs creating a more private space that is juxtaposed by upstairs’ raftered openness.

As for coffee, we ordered a cup of flat white from the “Addicted†Coffee Bar and we were pleasantly surprised by its flavour. Café hoppers have become so savvy and so protective of the way they enjoy their coffee lately, that if a cappuccino dropped below RM7, they’d be suspicious. Or if coffee was served at an establishment that didn’t display a very expensive coffee machine. None of that nonsense at Chocha, as the flat white we had, was light on the tongue, didn’t overwhelm the palate, and paired nicely with the food. Well… wine’s better, but if alcohol isn’t your thing, just know you’ve got options.

The cafe’s repertoire spans East & West – for a taste of both, the crunchy-juicy buttermilk fried chicken leg with Malaysian fried rice, Indonesian sambal terasi & Thai-dressed sweet-sour salad makes for a fulfilling meal (RM23); other options include satay chicken baguettes & chicken chop with spaghetti. The piccolo latte is satisfactory too, though its presence illustrates how this isn’t a venue for the neighbourhood. True story: A man who works nearby walked in, saw the coffee on the table & asked how much it costs. Two ringgit, he guessed. When told it was RM10, he recoiled & muttered his surprise, leaving without hesitation.

Quartz stone slabs floor tiles, torn wall paints, ceiling wood planks, vintage shade lamps – most of the elements in this lot are remained untouched, further completed with marble tables, kopitiam round chairs, restructured sewing machine, Chinese armchairs and so forth for deeper retro style. At the same time creatively blend in cutting-edge look with a mini courtyard and a little lush greenery.

There are espresso-based coffees, some which gotten On’s creative treatment as well – such as the rose latte and coconut latte – and a range of fragrant, pretty drinks like lavender green tea, Black Forest tea infused with blueberries, raspberries and blackberries and a tangy-sweet and very aromatic rose lemonade, made with fruit and actual flowers.

There are so many more signature dishes and drinks at Leaf & Co., but due to its big portion, we were only able to get to 3 of their dishes. In today’s world, it is very rare to get cafes in city centre that are still giving out a very relaxing and zen ambiance. Leaf & Co. is the rare few that do! If you are looking for a getaway in KL, why not drop by Leaf & Co. We are sure you’d feel recharged after spending some time at the cafe!

“Amo,†in Italian is short for “loveâ€, and at this hidden gem of a café in Chinatown, Coffee Amo lives up to its moniker. The owners and baristas at Coffee Amo pour a whole lot of love and passion for their brew into the cup and pass it to their patrons. And judging from the healthy group of regulars who had stopped in for a cuppa on a recent Sunday afternoon, I’d say the community is giving the love right back.

The Toast Co. Cafe at The Grocer’s Inn, Jalan Sultan Kuala Lumpur (Next to Petaling Street) has taken over the former location of The Front Door. Glad that changes to the interior is minimal, as we have always love the charming vintage, back-to-olden-days ambience of this century’s old building. The more obvious change would probably be the colourful painting at the shop front that adds lively touch to the cafe.

Like any good cafe, a number of desserts and pastries are offered to take with your cuppa. We asked about the origin of the Carrot-Walnut Cake (RM12) and Joshen indicated that he is the sole proprietor of this deeply textured, homestyle dessert. This is not surprising since the baker is… wait for it…his MOM! His family has enjoyed this lovely cake every year since it was always Dad’s choice for his birthday. Apparently, she also makes a killer orange cake too.

I like the ambiance here, it is spacious and tables + chairs are arranged in such a way that enables ample spaces between each other. For some reason this cafe exudes a chilled out + ‘take it easy’ vibe. At the time when I was there, there was a couple of caucasians in their shorts + tshirts + singlets talking and laughing to their hearts content which naturally lead to it being a boisterous and jolly environment. Every now and then people from the Grocers’ Inn, some would decide to sit in and have something to drink and some would just pass through to head out. No matter what though, there would always be greetings thrown every now and then – hellos, hey, hows it going?, good day. It was all pretty fascinating. You feel yourself being automatically pulled in into this jovial atmosphere. I liked it.
