If you are looking for a minimalistic café, look no further than X Coffee The Japan Store. The multi-roaster coffee bar’s original outlet is in Q Sentral but has an outpost in Isetan The Japan Store. They specialises in beans from cult Japanese roasters — Maruyama, Fuglen and Nozy. Do expect prices to be a wee bit pricier because of that, but be rest assured that it is high quality brewed coffee.

Various coffee beans from the global region are available with different roasting profile to suit each individual palate. For someone like me who has always enjoyed the fruity and floral notes like Ethiopian beans, Aricha Natural from Glitch Coffee & Roasters suits me best. Comes daintily with notes of strawberry, rose hip and red wine (oh, wine! Somehow my eyes tend to grow brighter whenever the wine word hits me, hehe) for a rounder mouthfeel, it simply makes a smooth and crisp kind of coffee enjoyment.

They use Cores Coffee Filter recommended by Maruyama coffee and it’s in gold!!! Yes, plated with gold! The Cores Pour Over Stand sells at around RM200++ while the Cores Gold Filter sells at around RM400++. Although the cone filter is made in China, I am quite confident with the Japanese quality assurance.

The cafe is situated at G02, a little hidden. From the direction of main entrance, pass by Godiva Chocolate, with TOD’S on front left, TWG on front right. Turn left and Artelier comes in sight, surrounded by luxury brands including MCM, Moschino and Tory Burch. Despite the location, Artelier Coffee manages to blend well into the classy range with exquisite dark wooden brown, shiny black and pillars with ceiling-to-floor mirrors outlook. The space is more spacious too, twice of WA Cafe.

Artelier is still in its soft-launch phase; a menu of hot food with Japanese & Western inspirations is in the pipeline, but for now, customers can check out refreshing smoothie bowls (RM18 each; built with wholesome bases that include blended bananas, spinach, dragon fruit or mangoes), independently baked cakes (a raspberry buttercake is RM14 for a substantial slice), green tea from Matcha Hero Kyoto (RM15 for genmaicha, hojicha & sencha), & of course, the numerous coffee-based beverages that made WA Cafe (which closed in March 2015) a favourite of many, including the signature Dirty (RM14; cold milk splashed with a ristretto for multiple layers of flavour; there are plans to work with The Hub coffee roaster in OUG for future blends). Artelier’s motto is ‘Our love for coffee is the heart & soul of everything we do,’ a philosophy that its team embodies beautifully.

I went there for my team dinner and managed to try on their signature Lamb Shoulder! Oh my, oh my! It’s delicious! The lamb rack is cooked to perfection with grilled char on both end, and coated with a sweet & spicy sauce! Comes with well-seasoned crispy fries and peas (I wonder why, who eat peas?!?!). Personally, I love the flavour as well as meat textures. If you don’t mind to spend a bit more, perhaps you should throw in a bottle of red wine, I assure you a perfect night ahead!
