5 Cafe Hopping Ideas Around KL (July)

Have you miss out some of the cafes around Kuala Lumpur?
Nothing to do in this coming weekend?
Why not try out these 5 cafe hopping ideas?
Gürumę Coffee, Mont Kiara

Gürumę Coffee is out to prove that good coffee doesn’t have to be costly or time-consuming affairs. Located in Mont Kiara, the coffee joint features a simple and functional interior with limited seating – rest assured you won’t find a crowd of WiFi hoarders here – while the colourful manga-inspired designs on their cups reflect their ambition of making gourmet coffee approachable, fun and quick. The coffee is made from a house blend of medium-roasted beans sourced from South America, Sumatra and Ethiopia to create a balanced cup of coffee that’s neither bitter nor too light.
Coffees are reasonably priced, starting from RM4.90 for an espresso, RM6.90 for a long black and RM7.90 for a latte, with the latter two served in an 8oz cup. For those who fancy a more delicate brew, cold brews are also available at RM9 a bottle and RM15 for two. Aside from coffee, the store also has a small selection of house-made Danishes, cookies and muffins that are priced at a fraction of what you’ll find at coffee chain stores.

X Coffee The Japan Store, Bukit Bintang
If you’re still having trouble locating the minimalist X Coffee in Q Sentral, you’ll be glad to know that the multi-roaster coffee bar has an outpost in Isetan The Japan Store.
Like the outlet in Q Sentral, this X Coffee bar specialises in beans from cult Japanese roasters, namely Maruyama, Fuglen and Nozy. As such, the prices are higher than usual, but you can expect quality hand-brew coffee with lots of flavour.
You can select your beans from a list of single origins or award-winning roasts. The menu also extends to espresso-based coffee, hot and iced chocolate and matcha latte, and cold-pressed juices. You can buy coffee beans here as well (including those from Glitch), along with coffee flower honey and coffee syrup.
The space itself is beautifully designed: seating pods dominated by wood elements and accentuated with mood lighting. And because it’s located on the third floor where the bookstore is, it’s usually very calm and quiet here. From time to time, X Coffee will fly in renowned baristas and roasters from Japan for special coffee workshops.

Fancy Breakfast Club, Bangsar

If you’ve spotted the posters stuck in the alleys of Telawi, KL’s guerrilla dining purveyors now have a new home – albeit in a more conventional upstairs lot on Jalan Telawi (to be precise, where Bazarro used to be). While Fancy Breakfast Club previously operated as a sort of underground weekend brunch club, a physical outlet means you can waltz in on a weekday morning for a big breakfast without a reservation.
The team at this reincarnated version of Fancy Breakfast Club is a mix of the old and the new: drinks guy Faris Chen still experiments with coffee and beverages, the design touches of stylist-and-florist extraordinaire Aida Azwar are evident in the new space, but the kitchen is where things are slightly different. The kitchen at Fancy Breakfast Club 3.0 is helmed by the all-new new team of Chef Zam and Umar Hariz, who will be designing different menus every other month.
For now, the weekday breakfast (RM40) from 8am to 12noon comes with your choice of main (choose from turkey club sandwich, Pink Mushroom Benedict and streaky beef potato rosti among many more), a side dish of the day (we had roasted vegetables, fresh fruits and a coffee cake) with juice, and refillable tea or coffee. Dishes are also available à la carte for RM25 each. Fancy Breakfast Club still host their weekend brunches from 11am to 2pm at RM65 per pax (more props! A buffet counter!), but you’ll need to book your spot in advance.

KOPENHAGEN COFFEE, MONT KIARA

Promising a slice of Scandinavia in Mont Kiara, Kopenhagen Coffee pays homage to the cafe culture of Denmark’s capital city of spires: This sunny, shutterbug-friendly space is spearheaded by Danish software entrepreneur Peter Sehested, now living in KL & keen to kindle the hospitality of his hometown here.

Piu Piu Piu, Kampung Attap

Inspired by the standing bars of Tokyo, Piu Piu Piu makes for a great spot to enjoy a quiet day with coffee (or alcoholic drinks) and desserts. The Lemon Sour Plus, for example, is an interesting blend of preserved lemons with housemade soda and a splash of shochu. For those with a sweet tooth, try the fresh banana cake or the gula Melaka apple crumble tarts.
